Snapchat still reigns king of private chatting. Yes, both users want privacy, but they want it for different reasons. After careful analysis and comparison between the two apps, we can find that both are excellent in terms of securing your privacy with functions such as end-to-end encryption, message disappearing, group messaging and no personal data. This was an interesting strategy considering that Snapchat users, for the most part, are not looking for the same thing as Wickr users. Obviously, CoverMe and Wickr are outstanding platforms that integrate communication and privacy protection. This allows for password resets and verification of possession in Wickr Pro only. Wickr Me uses an nameless username while Wickr Pro uses an e-mail address as your username. Many saw this as an attack on Snapchat as several hackers have been able to recover photos and videos that were supposedly destroyed by Snapchat. The difference between Wickr Pro and Wickr Me is limited to particular features they each run off the identical secure code base. Depending on your use case and threat model, you may want to consider using Wickr Pro. Wickr Pro and Wickr Me both run off the same secure code base, and there is a free version of Wickr Pro available. At the beginning of 2014 Wickr made waves by offering $100,000 to anyone who could tamper with the privacy of messages or documents sent on the app. Before I take you deeper into the guts of Wickr Me, we need to talk about the differences between Wickr Me and Wickr Pro. Could Wickr gain ground on the private message sharing giant? It’s certainly possible, but with 100 times more users, it will take quite some time. Luckily for Snapchat, Wickr only has just over 1 million users as opposed to Snapchat’s 100 million. Interestingly enough, professionals in the financial sector are using Wickr more than teens. In that sense there is not currently a place on this app to successfully advertise. People do not use this app to socialize for the most part. However, Wickr does not have a “My Story” page. “Grown ups” are the ones who spend big time money on advertising. Snapchat should be concerned about Wickr because of this fact. This is the best way I have seen the difference between the two apps articulated, “Wickr is Snapchat for grown ups” (). Sounds familiar right? The big difference is that users can send documents and can set a much longer time window until it self destructs. According to Wickr’s website the app allows users to “send and receive encrypted and self destructing messages including photos and file attachments”. Sure you could look at Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and the mainstream social media outlets as competition, but I want to look at another “under the radar” channel. Also, with the help of the best brother ever we got a feel for what a heavy user of the Snapchat does with it. I’ve talked a little bit about how Snapchat works, who uses it and why, and its place on Gartner’s Hype Cycle.
